Only 4 days 1 hour 27 minutes and 422.16 miles separate me from the inauguration of our 44th president.
Primary Day
My journey toward Barack Obama’s Presidency began a little over a year ago when I went to Salem, NH knocking door to door on Primary Day asking for people’s vote. I was sent out on my own, but in the Salem Headquarters I met people who had driven over seven hours to do whatever they could to support their candidate. But would it pay off? Well that cold day in January, it didn’t pay off. Hillary Clinton won New Hampshire, but volunteers from all over the country kept making phone calls, knocking on doors, raising money and proving that “Yes we can” and then finally on November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States.
Election NightI
I watched the returns on from the Biltmore in Providence, Rhode Island with some friends and Rhode Island Democrats. I saw grown men cry because they never thought they would see the day when an African American was elected president. But that day came. People shared stories of spending weeks in Ohio campaigning. So many people contributed to Obama’s win and that is why now this is being considered “The People’s Inauguration”. It was definitely a night to remember, but it will probably be topped by this weekends festivities and the swearing in ceremony on Tuesday.
… Packed and ready to go
After packing, I feel like I am ready to go skiing. Forecasters are predicting that it will be around 33* on Tuesday. I have plenty of layers for the event, a pair of knit leggings many would consider fashionable that I will be using for warmth, 2 pairs of gloves, my puffy marshmallow coat, along with my hat, and mittens. Between the layers I have my day attire and dresses for cocktail parties. Oh and two camera’s. I think I’m ready. I should be arriving in DC by 4pm, were driving and leaving home at 7:30am.
Rumors are the city is already crowded so it could take us a little while to get through the city, but it will be worth it!
